Peter Ketchand
Peter Ketchand, CFA®, MBA Partner; Director of Research Financial Advisor, RJFS

Peter is a skilled investment management professional with more than 15 years of experience in the financial services industry. As head of our investment committee, he oversees the research and trading teams and manages the ongoing analysis of our portfolios.

He possesses a global investment perspective gained from spending over five years on a team focused on regional and global equity strategies for clients across Europe, Africa and Asia.

“I am continuously reviewing current and potential investments, analyzing our asset allocations and looking toward potential changes. This allows us to confidently say to clients that we handle their investments with care,” says Peter. “I maintain a consistent conservative approach to investing, seeking a good balance between risk mitigation and total returns.”

He has a broad range of experience, with a background that includes portfolio management, client service, sales and marketing, and operations. As a Chartered Financial Analyst®, Peter holds one of the world’s most respected and recognized professional designations. He also holds Series 7, 9, 10 and 66 securities licenses.

“I believe that I have a disciplined approach and the benefit of experience. This allows me to have confidence in our investment allocations and not get pulled into the next big this-time-it’s-different thing,” says Peter.

Peter is constantly evaluating the market and his investment philosophy and process. He is willing to adapt to changing conditions should they appear to be long term in nature. “I have developed several internal proprietary analytical tools that we use as we look at the market – we use these on an ongoing basis. I also help provide analysis to clients as requested,” says Peter.

Peter oversees the trading team and reviews all trades that go through the branch. “I am also available to come up with trading strategies should they have questions – this is my responsibility from a branch management perspective,” says Peter.

He writes and updates our written market outlook on a frequent basis. “Starting this year, I am also creating content for our clients and prospects in the form of videos that go out via various platforms – including here on the website,” he says.

Peter joined Owens Estate & Wealth Strategies Group in 2013, serving as a senior vice president of investments and a research analyst. He became our director of research in 2018. He also serves on the Nevada County Economic Resource Council.

Earlier in his career, Peter spent nine years at Brandes Investment Partners in Geneva, Switzerland, as an associate portfolio manager and operations analyst for Europe, the Middle East and America. He also advised on corporate actions like buybacks, mergers and acquisitions.

Prior to his time in investment management, Peter was engaged in marketing and market analysis for both the public and private sectors. He earned an MBA from the University of Houston and a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in English and history from Northwestern University, where he played on the baseball team.

“I was attracted to investment analysis and management because it is all about probabilities and how they can work for you or against you. And that is how I like to organize my thoughts. Since no one knows the future, the best you can do is stack the probabilities in your favor,” Peter says.

Peter was born on a mountaintop in Tennessee and raised in Houston, Texas. He spent time in Portland, Oregon, San Diego, California, and Geneva, Switzerland, and now resides on 10 acres in Rough & Ready, California, where he lives with his wife, Deanna, and their children, Ella, Luke and Zach. In his free time, Peter enjoys travel, working on his home and property, keeping up with his kids and all of their activities and interests, and trying to optimize a healthy lifestyle with a busy schedule.
